Sometimes change is not good, but in this case it is.
Dickson Public Schools is working to improve the campus for the 2019 school year.
Matt Krimmer, Dickson High School principal, talks about future plans for the upcoming school year.
There are a couple of staff adjustments taking place.
“There are two new faculty members joining Dickson this year. We have a new men’s head basketball coach named Norman Tippeconnie,” Krimmer said. “He’s from Perkins-Tryon, and he will also be the new US History teacher as well. Tippeconnie is very good at what he does, and we are lucky to have him. We are also getting a new band director. Her name is Debra McMurry, and she was a former band director at Ardmore prior to leading the orchestra for the Ardmore Theatre and First Baptist Church.“
Teaching devices will be replaced in the classrooms.
“Starting this year, we will no longer have smart boards in our classrooms, we will have smart TVs instead. The reason behind this change is because the screen resolution is much better and as a Google-School, the TVs integrate better with our computers. They have lower overhead costs — meaning no subscriptions or expensive bulbs. They are cheaper upfront and to replace.”
Students will have more options of classes to choose from when it comes to making their schedule.
“We are now offering calculus and physics courses to our high school students,” Krimmer said. “Journalism and ancient medieval studies are two new electives that students can also take.”
Not only are there changes being made in the classroom, but outside the classroom as well.
“We are building a new multi-media lab that will be located in the high school near the high school computer labs,” Krimmer said. “The renovation is nearly complete, and the lab will be running by the beginning of school. The front of the bleachers are being bricked to improve the look of the football field and will be done before season starts as well.”
Since Dickson’s student body is expanding, they have to make room for all of the kids.
“We turned our administration building into a cafeteria for the middle school and high school,” Krimmer said. “The current cafeteria will be for the lower and upper elementary. We want to be able to serve lunch at more appropriate times for students to help with their education. With only one cafeteria, the students were eating either too early or too late, so we want to keep them from getting hungry so they can focus more on their studies.”
